Early Exposure

Opportunity Hub simultaneously began to productize its early exposure, education & training, ecosystem building and capital formation programs in Atlanta in order to expand and scale globally. Today, OHUB as it is affectionally known has repositioned itself as an inclusive innovation, entrepreneurship and investment ecosystem building platform focused on early exposure, education & training, ecosystem building and capital formation in underserved and under-tapped communities as a definitive path to disrupting poverty and the racial wealth gap.

Each year, major corporations, tech companies, startups, ecosystem builders, influencers and foundations sponsor HBCU@SXSW so that top African American and Latinx technology and business talent from our nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI’s), Tribal Colleges and Predominantly White Institutions (PWI’s) with intentional diversity initiatives can gain the necessary immersive exposure, interactive learning opportunities and direct access to paid summer internships or permanent jobs in the innovation economy that are afforded by attending SXSW.

HBCU@SXSW is apart of South by SouthWest (SXSW), the largest interactive technology conference and festival on the planet. In 2015, more than 84,385 attendees experienced amazing keynotes, hundreds of panels and exclusive networking opportunities that provide buzz-generating exposure and opportunities to engage with decision makers in the innovation economy.

In 2016, we sponsored 50 college students to go to SXSW. In 2017, 100 students from 41 colleges and universities attended. Ninety (90%) of the students that attend are placed in paid summer internships or permanent jobs.

OHUB is working diligently to increase this number to 500 students. Please review our 2018 sponsorship proposal. Current sponsors include MailChimp, Capital One, Comcast, Chick-fil-A, Microsoft, Delta Air Lines, Deloitte and more. Twitter, LinkedIn & Uber are sponsors too.

OHUB has also secured Cafe Blue for a 3 day #IncusiveInteractive House activation that will feature daily programming, including our six official panels, networking events, receptions and most important, provide a safe space for our students, sponsors, speakers and allies to interact, engage and excel while at SXSW.

THE PROBLEM

Less than 2% of African Americans, Latinx Americans, and American Indians are represented in tech today. Less than 1% of the $85+ billion in angel and venture capital that many high growth technology companies access to startup and grow goes to founders from these communities.

The average net worth of an African American family is less than $11,000 compared to $141,000 of the average white American family. Additionally, most Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI's), Tribal Colleges and Predominately White Institutions (PWI's) are located in cities that don’t have growing technology companies that are hiring or a thriving startup community that is creating jobs and multi-generational wealth for its stakeholders.

Even for those schools that are located in cities that have growing innovation economies, their access to these tech hubs is nascent or non-existent.

WE HAVE DEFINITIVE SOLUTIONS

To address these systemic challenges, Opportunity Hub has launched OHUB@ as a branded platform to provide colleges and universities and their respective administrators, faculty and students with the exposure, knowledge, opportunities, connections and tools to effective launch a technology and startup ecosystem from the ground up, thereby connecting them to the global innovation, entrepreneurship and investment economy.

SOLUTIONS

Campus License & Branding. OHUB will license its globally respected brand to the school for the purpose of launching a technology and startup entrepreneurship initiative in its city.

Listing. Campus listing on our website and mobile application as a trusted safe space to learn, engage and connect regardless of race, gender or sexuality.

Monthly Programming. Delivery of a quality live webcast event each month to include exclusive presentations and conversations from diverse and inclusive technologists, recruiters, innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors.

Campus Chapter. Ability to establish and operate an official student chapter of Opportunity Hub on campus.

Technology Recruiter Network. Access to a global network of 50+ technology and Fortune 500 company recruiters at companies include but not limited to: (list companies within the network, maybe have corresponding picture)

#YesWeCodeFund. In select cities, priority application to #YesWeCode Fund diversity coding scholarships. HBCU@SXSW. Priority student application access to HBCU@SXSW.

Joint Venture. Joint venture on offering OHUB’s African American Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Investment textbook and college course (available Fall 2018).

Investor Syndicate. Access to startup seed stage investment syndicate created to close the gap in funding to vetted high growth minority startups. Requires at least 25 schools.

STRATEGY

-The school pays from existing grants or funds such as Title III, Career Pathways, LSAMP, etc.

-School asks successful alumni entrepreneurs to sponsor and provide mentorship to student chapter

-Student chapter sells memberships to students and community startups

-Student alumni association and students run crowdfunding campaign to fund 10 students to attend SXSW

-School funds investment via its investments vehicles or alumni

OUTCOMES

-Attract new students to your school because of your visible commitment to technology, startup entrepreneurship and new wealth creation

-Retain students in the STEAM fields to increase graduation and graduate school enrollment

-Increase career pathways to place students as interns and new hires at technology companies, innovative Fortune 500 companies and high growth startups
